Amman – Jordan’s tourism industry is experiencing a strong resurgence in 2025, with revenue soaring 22.8% in January to $680.5 million, compared to $554.2 million in the same month last year. The latest figures, released by the Central Bank of Jordan (CBJ) on Wednesday, highlight growing visitor interest in the Kingdom’s top attractions, including Petra, Wadi Rum, and Amman.
The surge in revenue was largely driven by increased spending from Jordanian expatriates (+22.7%), non-Jordanian Arab visitors (+20.2%), and international tourists (+30.7%). These figures reflect the enduring appeal of Jordan’s cultural heritage, natural wonders, and vibrant cities.
At the same time, spending on outbound tourism also saw a notable jump, rising 29.4% to $184.9 million in January 2025, up from $142.9 million a year earlier.
Tourism Performance in 2024: A Mixed Picture
While 2025 has started on a high note, Jordan’s tourism sector faced setbacks in 2024, with total tourism revenue reaching JD7.239 billion, marking a 2.3% decline from 2023. According to the CBJ, this drop was linked to a 3.9% decrease in tourist arrivals, particularly from European and American markets.
Despite the decline, some segments showed growth. Tourism revenue from Jordanian expatriates increased by 7.7%, while income from non-Jordanian Arab tourists rose by 12%. However, spending by visitors from Europe (-54%), the US (-35.2%), and other nationalities (-15.3%) fell significantly.
Impact of Regional Events on Jordan’s Tourism
The downturn in 2024 was largely attributed to the ongoing war on Gaza, which began on October 7, 2023. According to a June 2024 International Monetary Fund (IMF) report, the conflict led to a wave of cancellations from travelers in advanced economies—who typically contribute to one-third of Jordan’s tourism revenue.
Optimism for 2025 and Beyond
Despite past challenges, the sharp rebound in early 2025 signals renewed confidence in Jordan’s tourism sector. With its breathtaking historical sites like Petra, the vast desert landscapes of Wadi Rum, and the bustling energy of Amman, Jordan remains a premier destination for travelers seeking history, adventure, and cultural experiences.
As the global travel industry stabilizes, Jordan is well-positioned to continue attracting visitors from around the world, further strengthening its vital tourism sector.
