Jerash History

Jerash is one of the best-preserved Roman-era cities in the world. Located only 40 kilometers north of Amman, visitors today can trace the chariot ruts on the Cardo, admire the mosaics which were laid contemporaneously to those found in Madaba, and test the acoustics of the North and South Theaters. Inhabited since Neolithic times, Jerash came of age when Pompey swept through the region in 63 BC Jerash became one of the largest cities in the Decapolis federation. Today's cultural events, like the Jerash Festival and the Roman chariot races, which take advantage of the unique setting and fantastic acoustics of the restored theaters, bring back some of the excitement and bustle that must have marked Jerash during its heyday. The history of Jerash can be traced in its name. The indigenous Semitic inhabitants in the 1 st century BC called it "Garshu." The Greeks founded "Antioch on the Chrysorrhoea," or the Golden River, on the same spot, naming it for the stream that runs through the area. The Romans who came in with Pompey changed the original name Garshu to "Gerasha." This name can be found in Pliny's Natural History, when he discusses the Decapolis. In the 19th century, the Circassians and Arabs who lived in what was then a small, rural community arabicized the name to "Jerash.'

Jerash was linked to the trade routes by a series of roads that led to other major trade centers like Amman, Bosra, Damascus, Pella and Petra. During the Pax Romana, Roman troops and international caravans used these roads, bringing new ideas and energy with them. Emperor Hadrian visited in 129 AD and a Triumphal Arch was built in his honor near the Hippodrome. The highest of the three arches was 13 meters high and originally all three had wooden doors. Today, the Arch still stands and is in the final stages of restoration. The inspiration of these visitors is reflected in these amazing buildings.

Emperors Trajan and Hadrian, during the first half of the 2nd century, encouraged the construction of many of the buildings still extant today. Jerash became rich from iron ore mining in Ajlun, agricultural farming on the surrounding plains, and levying taxes on traders coming through the area, much like customs duties are levied now. However, inscriptions on many of the buildings, most prominently on the South Theater, indicate that individuals and guilds donated money to help fund the construction. An individual named Titus Flavius, son of Dionysius, for example, donated some of the seats in the Theater. With a possible population of about 25,000 people at its height, there may have been an enormous amount of money for civic architecture.

Ajloun Castle

Ajloun Castle is one of the greatest examples of Islamic Ayyubid military architecture. The first stage of construction began ca.1184 by General Izzidin Usama, nephew of Salahuddin AL Ayyoubi, who built it on a hill 1100 meters above sea level.

The initial structure consisted of a compact nucleus stronghold with four main towers. Subsequent enlargements followed immediately with the addition of two more towers between 1184 and 1193 AD. Between 1193 and 1218, during the times of AL Malek AL Adel, the second stage of construction was completed with enlargements by the castle governor Aybak Bin Abdullah. He added the seventh tower, which wraps around the southeast corner of the building.

Stage three of construction centered on the renewal of the northeast tower when the castle was used as administrative center during the reign of AL Malek AL Nasser Salhudin Yousef between 1250 and 1259.

Detailed activities of the Dead Sea Trip Tour

Madaba City - Church of St. George (Map Church)

The oldest and most famous floor, the Mosaic Map, was discovered in 1884 in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. It was originally laid in 560 AD. Centering on Jerusalem, the map portrays the region with accuracy and humor. Archeologists have been able to positively identify most of the 150 named sites due to the accurate portrayals of natural features such as the River Jordan or the Dead Sea, as well as the labels, which used color and font size to indicate the importance of the sites

Mount Nebo:

In the Bible, Mount Nebo is mentioned as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land that he would never enter. You can enjoy the view from the summit that provides a panorama of the Holy Land and the valley of the River Jordan. From the summit, the West Bank City of Jericho and Jerusalem are visible on a very clear day. You will get an opportunity to explore Mount Nebo on a full day trip to the Dead Sea.

Al-Mujib Siq Trail or The Baptism Site (Summertime Only - From April to October)

This option is NOT possible during winter time due to short daylight.

On your Dead Sea holiday tour, you will get a chance to explore this trail that starts at the Visitor Center near the Mujib Bridge. Here you will explore the cantilevered walkway over the dam and then follow the course of the river between the towering sandstone cliffs to the base of a large waterfall. It is found that depending on seasonal rainfall levels, small ponds are formed in the gorges that are deep enough for swimming. This place is ideal for slowly walking and enjoying the cool water and shade (especially in the heat of summer).

Mujib Siq Trail is usually open starting from 1 April till the end of March every year (Depending on the rain season and level , sometimes it can be closed for days even during the opening period based on rain level ).

Dead Sea Beach:

The Dead Sea hotels and beach area is around 50km away from Amman city, you could use one the hotels beaches , and This gives affordable access to the Dead Sea. The grounds of the Dead Sea are attractively landscaped and the beach is pristine in condition with sun umbrellas, a vibrant local flavor, and freshwater showers. You can strike up a conversation with a Jordanian family at this place. Here you can find a number of swimming pools, a restaurant and some gift shops as well.

The Mountain of Nebo or Mount Nebo  – Jordan Dead Sea Day Tour

Mount Nebo was inhabited since remote antiquity. However, it’s real fame derived from the biblical event that occurred upon it as described in the Book of Deuteronomy 34: the death of Prophet Moses, who climbed this holy mountain at the end of his life to see the promised land:

“Then Moses went up from the lowlands of Moab to Mount Nebo, to the top of Pisgah, eastwards from Jericho. And the Lord showed him the whole land…There in the land of Moab Moses the servant of the lord died, as the lord had said .He was buried in a valley in Moab opposite Beth-Peor ; but to this day no one knows his burial –place”

Mount Nebo rises from the Trans Jordanian plateau 7 km(4 miles) west of the city of Madaba . It is bounded on the east by the Wadi Afrit, on the north by the Wadi “Uyun Musa, on the south by the Wadi al-Judaydah which extends into the Wadi al-Kanisah .Mount Nebo’s highest crest reaches an altitude of 800 m above sea level. The other peaks are lightly lower. Of these, the two most historically important are the western peak of Siyagha with the al-Mukhayyat, identified with the Town of Nebo , In 1932 the Custody of the Terra Sancta succeeded in purchasing the spur of Siyagha and that of al-Mukhayyat

Jordan Dead Sea Full Day Tour itinerary includes the visit of Mount Nebo

The Mosaic Floors - Jordan Dead Sea Day Tour

After 60 years of work ,the best result of the Franciscan work in the mountain is the wealth of mosaic floors discovered .On mount Nebo , in the sanctuary of Moses and the surrounding monastic buildings atop Siyagha, in the churches of the village of Khirbat Al-Mukhayyat ,and the valleys of “Uyun Musa and “Ayn Al-Kanisah ,there have been preserved a concentration of mosaic works which are fundamental to understanding the development of Byzantine –Umayyad mosaic art in the territory of Madaba from the IVth to the second half of the VIIIth  century .

These are a precious archive for the history of the Christian community of the diocese of Madaba and of the monastic presence on the mountain. The name of 8 mosaicists who worked in the sanctuary of Moses, in the village and in the valleys, add another worthwhile detail to this rich historic-artistic documentation.

The Monastic presence on Mount Nebo - Jordan Dead Sea Day Tour

We owe the first testimony for the presence of colony of monks on Mount Nebo to the pilgrim Egeria. She related her encounter with the ascetic monks who lived in cells close to the Spring of Moses in the “Uyun Musa valley.

Chronologically, the monastic presence extends from the second half of the Fourth century to the Ninth-Tenth century. The inscriptions attest the different forms of monastic life experienced on the mountain ranging from the coenobitic life in the major monastery at Siyagha to the more rigid ascetic lives as attested by the inscriptions brought to light in the small Theotokos monastery in the Wadi “Ayn al-Kanisah

The Greek inscription with the four Rivers of Paradise in the corners (Ghion, Fison, Tigers and Euphrates) reads: “By the providence of God this venerable monastery of the holy Mother of God was rebuilt , in the days of Job , bishop of Madaba ,and of George the recluse , for the preservation of all the benefactors, in diction 15, year 6270 (762 A.D).

Amman City Trip Tour

Amman City Full Day Trip Tour Highlights

Jordan Tours Petra Wadi Rum DeadSea 13

Amman was inhabited for more than 9,000 years according to the latest archaeological findings in and around the city. The city became the capital of the Ammonites and named as Ammon; used by  the Greeks and the Romans and was named Philadelphia, So Amman has a rich and deep history and tens of historical sites can be seen in and around the city.

The city Amman is built on seven hills, or jabals, each of which more or less defines a neighborhood.

The seven hills of Amman are an enchanting mixture of ancient and modern. Honking horns give way to the beautiful call to prayer which echoes from the stately minarets which grace the city.

Gleaming white houses, kebab stalls and cafés are interspersed with bustling markets—known in Arabic as souqs—and the remains of civilizations and ages long past. Sunset is perhaps the best time to enjoy Amman, as the white buildings of the city seem to glow in the fading warmth of the day. The greatest charm of Amman, however, is found in the hospitality of its residents. Visitors to Amman—and the rest of Jordan, for that matter—are continually surprised by the genuine warmth with which they are greeted. "Welcome in Jordan" is a phrase visitors will not soon forget.

Amman is built on seven hills, or jabals, each of which more or less defines a neighborhood. Most jabals once had a traffic circle, and although most of these have now been replaced by traffic lights, Amman’s geography is often described in reference to the eight circles which form the spine of the city. First Circle is located near downtown, and the series extends westward through Eighth Circle.

Detailed activities of Amman Full Day Trip Tour

Most of Amman’s noteworthy historical sites are clustered in the downtown area, which sits at the bottom of four of Amman’s seven hills, or jabals. The ancient Citadel, which towers above the city from atop Jabal al-Qala’a, is a good place to begin a tour of the city. The Citadel is the site of ancient Rabbath-Ammon, and excavations here have revealed numerous Roman, Byzantine and early Islamic remains. The most impressive building of the Citadel, known simply as al-Qasr ("the Palace"), dates back to the Islamic Umayyad period. Its exact function is unclear, but it includes a monumental gateway, an audience hall and four vaulted chambers. A colonnaded street also runs through the complex. To the north and northeast are the ruins of Umayyad palace grounds.

Close to al-Qasr lie the remains of a small Byzantine basilica. Corinthian columns mark the site of the church, which is thought to date from the sixth or seventh century CE. About 100 meters south of the church is what is thought to have been a temple of Hercules, today also known as the Great Temple of Amman. The temple was built in the reign of the emperor Marcus Aurelius (161-180 CE), and is currently under restoration. Also on Citadel Hill, just northwest of the Temple of Hercules, is the Jordan Archeological Museum. This small museum houses an excellent collection of antiquities ranging from prehistoric times to the 15th century. There is an exhibit of the Dead Sea Scrolls, a copy of the Mesha Stele (see Madaba section for explanation) and four rare Iron Age sarcophagi. Museum hours are 08:30-17:00 daily. On Fridays and official holidays the museum is open from 09:00-16:00.

Downhill from the Citadel and five minutes walk east from downtown, the Roman Theater is the most obvious and impressive relic of ancient Philadelphia. The theater, which was built during the reign of Antonius Pius (138-161 CE), is cut into the northern side of a hill that once served as a necropolis—or graveyard. It is very similar in design to the amphitheater at Jerash, and can accommodate 6000 spectators. The theater is still used periodically for sporting and cultural events.
